Whole‑Curriculum Overview
Broughton Primary Academy offers a rich, ambitious and interconnected curriculum designed to nurture confident, curious and capable learners. Across all subjects, the school aims to “reach for the stars”—cultivating resilience, independence, creativity, and a love of learning. The curriculum is grounded in strong subject knowledge, high expectations, and carefully sequenced progression from the early years to Year 6.
At its core, the curriculum promotes deep thinking, enquiry, and problem‑solving. Whether children are exploring a mathematical concept, analysing a historical source, conducting a science investigation or discussing philosophical questions in RE, they are encouraged to ask questions, investigate ideas, and reflect on their learning. Across all subjects, teachers foster a climate where mistakes are part of the learning journey and pupils develop confidence through exploration and experimentation.
A consistent feature of the curriculum is the focus on language and communication. High‑quality texts underpin English; explicit vocabulary development strengthens reading and comprehension; talk, discussion and reasoning are embedded across maths, science, humanities and the arts. This emphasis on speaking, listening and reading ensures pupils can express themselves clearly, appreciate diverse perspectives, and access all other curriculum areas with confidence.
The school places significant emphasis on broad cultural and personal development. Art, music and design teach creativity, evaluation and craftsmanship. PE cultivates health, teamwork, perseverance and competitive excellence. Spanish enables pupils to gain a global perspective and develop linguistic curiosity. Religious Education, PSHE and pastoral systems help pupils build respect, empathy, moral understanding and responsible citizenship, preparing them for life in modern Britain.
Across the curriculum, teachers have based elements of the curriculum on high‑quality structured programmes—including White Rose Maths and Science, Read Write Inc., The Write Stuff, Jigsaw PSHE, and specialist‑designed music and computing frameworks—to ensure consistency, rigour and progressive skill development. These approaches are enhanced by the expertise of specialist staff in areas such as PE and Music, as well as regular involvement from external partners and visiting practitioners who enrich children’s experiences.
Experiential learning is a defining feature of the curriculum. Pupils take part in fieldwork, residentials, visits to historical sites, performances, sporting competitions, and community events. These experiences deepen learning, build character, connect classroom knowledge to the real world, and foster a sense of belonging within the school and wider community.
Technology is embedded throughout learning. The computing curriculum—which spans programming, digital literacy and online safety—helps children become confident digital citizens. Digital tools also strengthen reading, writing, research, and creativity across other subjects.
Taken as a whole, Broughton Primary Academy’s curriculum aims to:
-
develop knowledgeable, articulate and reflective learners;
-
celebrate diversity and promote respect, tolerance and equality;
-
nurture curiosity, imagination, creativity and critical thinking;
-
empower pupils with the skills needed for the future; and
-
provide enriching opportunities that support academic, social and emotional growth.
It is a curriculum that blends structure with inspiration, academic rigour with creativity, and local identity with global awareness—preparing children not just for the next stage of their education, but for life.
